Frequently Asked Questions

Finding the right physiotherapist can sometimes feel overwhelming — especially if it’s your first time — but it doesn’t have to be. Let me answer some of the most common questions I get!

  • I help people of all ages and backgrounds restore and maintain their ability to move freely. This includes amateur, professional or retired dancers, athletes, moms, active adults or anyone looking for an empowering approach to physiotherapy.

  • • To determine if you have any accessibility needs so that the best of my Oakville locations and/or a virtual location can be chosen.

    • To ensure I have the proper skills for the reason you are seeking care.

    • To answer any questions you may have about physiotherapy with Jennifer Denys Physio.

    • To explain how the assessment process works, including with any relevant infection control protocols to discuss.

  • One pain or issue can have multiple causes, each needing a unique treatment plan for recovery or improvement. Before giving you a diagnosis or prescribing treatment, I need to hear your story and ask questions that will lead us to understand the underlying condition.

  • At your initial assessment, I take the time to listen and ask questions that will lead us to understand the underlying condition. I then outline a treatment plan, including self-care treatment you can begin right away from home.

  • All appointments occur either in Oakville, ON, or virtually anywhere in Ontario. For in-person appointments, I work out of multiple facilities in Oakville. The best location for your accessibility needs will be determined and communicated at your initial complimentary phone call.

  • Check your inbox or junk mail for an email with the subject: "All the details for your upcoming in-person appointment."

If you still can’t find it, you can text 905-208-8843 or email jen@jenniferdenys.com

  • Your appointment time is reserved just for you. A late cancellation or missed visit leaves a hole in my day that another client could have filled. As such, I require at least 24 hours of notice for cancellations or changes to your appointment. Clients who provide less than 24 hours of notice, or miss their appointment, will be charged a cancellation fee for the full cost of the appointment.

The only exception to my cancellation policy is an illness. If you are sick, please stay home and let me know immediately. If you have energy and feel well enough, we can continue your appointment online.

  • It is best to come in comfortable clothes that you could exercise in, prepared to have the injured part viewable at the skin level when indicated.

Dancers can wear dance leotards and tights, as well as bringing a cropped T-shirt/bra top, and shorts.

For acupuncture, all treated areas must be bare skin. Appropriate draping is available.

  • Jennifer Denys Physio is a private practice that is not covered by OHIP, but is covered by most extended health insurance plans. You can contact your extended health provider to determine your particular coverage to assist in private payments.

  • I prefer contactless methods of payment (credit card or e-transfers) but also accept cheques and cash.

  • Every injury is unique, but my goal is always to empower you toward independence as soon as possible.

As a guideline, in the beginning, you can expect somewhere between one to three visits per week.

As you improve past the inflammation phase, the frequency reduces to typically weekly or biweekly.

When reaching the "re-strengthening" phase of the healing process, appointments are even less frequent (3–5 weeks apart).

All recommendations are customized and specific. During the final stretch of your recovery journey, keeping your weekly or monthly follow-up contact is crucial. The frequency depends on the severity of your injuries. When you're ready to return to the activities you love without the risk of a looming setback, I will give you the "all clear."

  • Pain is part of the first and second phases of the healing process, but the third phase (the re-strengthening phase) is the most important to prevent a setback or a recurrence.

When your pain is gone (end of phase two), your tissues have “closed any gaps” and flushed out all the painful inflammation. The tissues, though, are “mended” in a fragile way. Tissues can only be appropriately and progressively stimulated back to “strong, tough for life” tissue during the third phase of the healing process.

After the pain is gone, our appointments will shift into a “customized exercises and recommendations” approach, on a steady and progressive journey to the point you fully participate at your pre-injury level, free from setbacks (including reduced risk of setbacks), and reduced risk of recurrence.

We will joyfully graduate to you not needing physio care when you are fully back to your pre-injury abilities, with any “causative factors” also addressed.

  • Your injury or undesirable physical situation is unique to you. While great tips, valuable insights, or exercises can be available on YouTube, not all may apply to you. Some could even worsen your situation.

A custom assessment, proper diagnosis, and customized treatment plan will ensure you get the right help for your issue. You are welcome to bring any YouTube links if you have questions about appropriateness for your needs.

  • • Everyone must complete a pre-appointment COVID screening (appointments proceed when answers are negative for COVID risk).

    • All surfaces contacted by clients are cleaned and disinfected before and after each session.

    • In-person clients wait in their vehicle until the clinic is ready for them to enter.

    • I wear a mask and face shield during the appointments.

    • I recommend all clients wear masks.

    • All appointments have a buffer between them to ensure you do not pass any other person.

    • I offer virtual care whenever deemed most appropriate.
